A walk through Main Street businesses
On July 19, 2024, representatives of Casa Comunitaria de Recursos (CCR) joined Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers on a walk through Main Street to talk with business owners and hear their concerns.
Participants included Gabriela Vega-Matthews, founder and executive director of CCR, Samantha Romero, and Paschelyn Cama. Thomas O’Neill, a member of the Poughkeepsie School Board, was also present.

Conversations with local business owners
During the walk, the group visited businesses such as Giselle Bakery, Taco Gool, and Pancho Villa, as well as other Main Street establishments.
Mayor Flowers spoke with owners about public safety and the measures the city was taking to address various situations in the area, including homelessness and illegal activity.
The business owners appreciated the visit and shared their concerns directly with city representatives.

CCR and its connection to the community
CCR’s participation in this activity was part of its work to bring the Latino and immigrant community closer to local institutions, information, and resources.
Joining these kinds of walks helps maintain contact with business owners, residents, and city representatives, while also creating spaces for conversation about neighborhood needs.

Dialogue about Main Street’s needs
During the conversations, the mayor spoke about municipal initiatives related to public safety and quality of life on Main Street.
Business owners had the opportunity to express their concerns and learn about some of the actions the city was developing to address them.
According to the City of Poughkeepsie’s official post, the mayor noted that the dialogue would continue as the city worked to address the situations affecting this commercial area.

Strengthening local connections
The walk was an opportunity to maintain contact among community members, business owners, and local representatives.
For Casa Comunitaria de Recursos, participating in gatherings like this is part of its mission to connect families with the organizations and institutions that can offer them guidance, information, and support.
